Less than 24 hours after the gunfire, Murphy – a former Goldman Sachs banker who served as President Barack Obama's ambassador to Germany – began calling for gun control without addressing the other circumstances involved in the crime.
"It's yet another reminder of the senseless gun violence, even having signed six stringent gun laws last week," Murphy said at a news conference Sunday following a service at Trenton's Galilee Baptist Church.
On Twitter, the governor also said the immediate aftermath is the time to speak about possible gun control.
“These are not inappropriate times to talk about gun policy," he wrote. "These are the most important times to talk about gun policy.”
Gov. Phil Murphy is planning a trip to Israel later this year, following a decades-long tradition of governors and politicians seeking higher office visiting the Jewish homeland.
Murphy disclosed that he is finalizing plans for the overseas trip during an unrelated news conference Tuesday in Madison, where he acknowledged a group of Israeli visitors.
"I'm looking forward to making the trip. We're finalizing the details to Israel this year," Murphy said. "I'm thrilled to get there."

Before he took office as New Jersey’s governor in January, Phil Murphy said he and his wife, Tammy, had the “great joy” of visiting Israel five times in the previous three-and-a-half years. On the fourth trip, they brought along their four children.
“They had one question when we were leaving: ‘Why can’t we live in Tel Aviv?’” he told some 700 people at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, eliciting laughter and cheers.
The Murphys were honored at the Rabbinical College of America’s (RCA) National Founders Gala on April 16. The RCA, in Morristown, is the N.J. headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement.
Murphy said his visits to Israel “have underscored the importance of a New Jersey-Israel relationship to our economic future,” particularly in the realms of technology, medicine, and education. He said that examples of those ties “remind us of the inextricable bond between peoples who want nothing more than to live and learn in freedom.”
