Ladder climbing in either private or academic sector forces a person to grow. Really pulls the curtain back. Competence is a baseline requirement for advancement but it isn't the main factor in many cases. Willpower, ambition, psychology, bullshit, and persuasion are important. Teachers and professors do a poor job of pointing out that this is why we should care about studying the humanities: human attitudes and bullshit matter everywhere. They matter a lot.
Stone cold geniuses like uncle Ted are an exception–dude was at or near the level of generational math genius. He was able to climb to the position of the youngest full prof in the history of UCB (correct me if I'm wrong, haven't looked at his CV in a minute) without the bullshit. We know how that turned out: he quit and went innawoods. Once folks started fucking with Teddy's woods he started fucking with folks. Enough with this tangent.
Only point is that dealing with competive, intelligent, "type A" people while having to pay attention to everything and remember details in order to tie them into office/university politics as well as the usual flow of business is stressful and makes a person careful.
