So it’s easiest to use on single cells. Think bacteria in a Petri dish. However, it can be used on human cells grown in Petri dishes, this is the kind of work I do. Big issue here, and what a lot of people are working on, is acquiring human cells, reprogramming them into stem cells (called IPSCs), and then CRISPRing them and putting them back into the body. Big thing though is messing with stem cells can be cancerous, so that’s what’s holding that back at this time
Big issue you gotta look out for is viral delivery. Can look up lentivirus or adenoviral delivery, basically hijacking sterile viruses to reliever CRISPR/Cas9 to the body. I know of at least 1 FDA approved therapy which involves using CRISPR delivered by virus to knock out a mutated protein that leads to blindness, though I’m fuzzy on the details. So it’s not to say it can’t be used in human, at least to knock out genes, it’s just much tougher. Editing genes in humans would be impossible at this time, well not impossible but incredibly unlikely and also ethically challenged, thus won’t get approval.
