An automation tax sounds good on the surface until you realise that actually industrial automation is a pretty small thing.
You only really see it in areas where replacing humans with machines creates massive gains in precision and quantity.
More often what you see is the exporting of industry to nations with a lower cost of labor. Vast sweatshops and factories in shithole countries where they can exploit the local populace and the methods of production haven't really changed that much since the middle of the last century.
People keep going "oh robots robots robots" but barely anyone actually uses industrial robotics. Your biggest users are in the auto industry and heavy industry. Where industrial robotics help get around the issue of dealing with large bulky heavy objects.
So just who is this automation tax going to target?
Maybe two or three sectors which are already struggling since the auto market is saturated to absurd extent and US heavy industry is losing ground to Chinese, Russian and European heavy industry?
