The problem with these people is that they are not treating video games as a hobby but as a life style.
This is clearly unhealthy, the problem is that their parents are hardly putting these kids with less free time and more physical activity.

However, it is very very easy to fall in very bad habits with video games and to have it wreck your life. Especially since 2007-2009, where a new era of video game began with more and more multiplayers and more and more grinding and dopamine hijacking bullshit being implemented, and also the whole Loto/gambling and macrotransactions being implemented.
I've always liked the Total War series. There's this one guy that streams himself playing every variant of Total War 7 days a week, at least 4 hours a day, sometimes 8 hours a day. It's his job. Judging from the people slinging money at him as he plays he makes a living off it. But he's sick of Total War. He knows it inside out and I mean he knows every quirk of its AI, everything it's going to do, all it's unrealistic exploits, and he's bored and cynical about the entire shit show. But he has to keep playing it. That's his income. It's awful for him but it's still better than packing gyproc onto construction sites with a crew of ex convicts. It's sad but funny too.
I see the entire phenomenon as an escape from the harsh realities of becoming a man, of going out in a hard ball competitive world where you can get your jaw broken for saying the wrong shit or stepping on the turf of the wrong guys.

Video games are yet another surrogate activity that people partake in to make life more fulfilling and worthwhile. Like Ted said, it takes zero effort to sustain yourself in modern society so you're left with no real goals or life of your own besides wage-slaving and feeding the beast. What people need is some sort of greater goal, a community or group larger than themselves that will promote health, fitness and national regeneration. The best thing to do would be to shame these people for being anti-social and unhealthy, while at the same time showing them that there is something more to life than staring at screens and pressing buttons. This would only really be effective if there was a party or movement for these people to then attach themselves to, but even to plant the seeds of an anti-consumerist, pro-nationalist lifestyle would be a giant leap forward. I think playing games with a strategic or tactical thought behind them is actually good for your mind, like playing chess. This is true, I keep it a hobby. Don't get me wrong, I go on hour long sprees sometimes if I find a game I love, but I do physical activity first, and take care of certain things around the house and what not. I fucking hate what's happening to the industry tho, what with the addiction-based tricks like loot boxes and BR gamemodes, and even Versus type multiplayer, it's all fucked. But something that truly disgusts me, is the ESports bullshit, and all the twitch faggotry that's taken hold, it's encouraging people to just make money off of doing something that is meant as strictly a hobby. It's not like music, where one can decide to make money on it by making something. Of course, making videogames are a different story, but I'm strictly talking about esports and trash like that.

I have to say, when I have played games, particularly when I binged on them, I was left with an odd empty feeling when I was done; it was unpleasant. 97% of games are aesthetically, intellectually and spiritually dead.

We can use the technology of video games and make them optimised for educational use, and possibly strategy games could be justified as brain training. For example, when I was a kid I played 'Doctor Kawashima's brain training' for Nintendo DS, I think games like this could possibly be beneficial if they are used in moderation.
