Most were bourgeoisie college students just looking to be part of a "movement". Are they? 20 years ago the average college student probably thought the WTO was a bad idea and represented crony capitalism. To tie it into the thread, American liberalism has always been the smiley face of empire. Global trade has benefited the U.S. by hoovering up surplus capital from the rest of the world to pay for its own consumption (financed with debt). But increasingly Europe and Asia do not need the U.S. and their reliance is not economic but ideological, political and military. Trump understands this this system is no longer working but he misunderstands the problem, and is trying to shift America to a more ruthlessly and nakedly imperialist model based on blackmailing individual countries into being exploited – the liberals see this as threatening to unravel the gravy train that has fueled the American empire for many decades.
