Or you could not focus on how they were guilty, but rather present it as a result of an historical process led by a series of contractions that needed to somehow be worked upon.

The question of whether they were "innocent" or "guilty" is irrelevant. Any steps taken to protect a revolution are justified a priori. The real question is what the punishment should be. If one is indeed innocent but one day fears they may be thought of otherwise, their heart is not with the revolution, it is with apprehension.
