Don't read the manifesto, it's a pamphlet and may give you the wrong impression of Marxism given that it was written for a party at the time with the intention of informing the masses who had no prior information on socialism/communism. It leaves out critical information. Read Gotha Program and Wage Labour and maybe the summary of capital Engels wrote if you don't want to jump straight into capital yet. If that's too dense, read Why Marx was Right by Eagleton given that he fits you're M-O.
