You can try Lubuntu, MX Linux or Peppermint OS they are more lightweight than mint while retaining its user friendliness.
But if you are happy with your linux mint installation, you should stick with it, don't fall for distro hopping.

Arch, but I don't do anything fucking stupid like post on /r/unixporn or "rice". It's just what I'm most comfortable on now and it's perfectly stable.
AUR requires compiling for a lot of things, but its not that slow with 2019 hardware.
Have you tried pamac to install packages fro the AUR? It's really great.
It's a GUI tool for installing package from Manjaro but it obviously works for arch too as they both use pacman.

I'm using an IBM ThinkPad x200. I run Windows 10 on my desktop since I share it with people who need Windows for some reason, but if I had it to myself I would run arch on that to, and it has a $400 GPU.
The problem with bloated distros isn't just the increased load average, it's also that you have to remove a bunch of packages to get it outfitted in a way that is actually usable.
Linux is already too much bloat for toasters like the 486 (pic related).

You could just reduce your NTFS data-partition size and install Linux or whatever else on a new partition.

debian all the way. it takes a while to customize and the debian team doesn't like synaptic for some reason (there's a thick known bug since at least 2017 nobody takes care of and in the newest testing release synaptic doesn't even start), however otherwise it's rock solid and fast under gnome, faster than ubuntu even. i also still use macos and windows though.
GNU Stow is pretty great I found. Basically a folder where you put all the dotfiles you want, and it links them to their proper places via symlinks. Make it a git repo and setting up your environment like you want is as simple as git cloning and stowing.
I've stopped distrohopping a few years back, so don't find myself having to set my shit up again and again, but this makes it easy to go and do that if it came to it.
But it does take time to figure out what you want to customize and how to in the first place, had to run linux as my main OS for a year or two until I got it down, it's my only OS now.

so you like typing and if apt update is the only thing you use your package manager for you might as well renounce desktop environments altogether and work in cli mode all the time. i for one do need a gui for certain applications and i like synaptic because it provides a much more convenient interface for most package management tasks than apt.

I campaign for social democracy myself but I don't honestly believe it should be the end goal. I don't think it's the best possible system. I just think it's the most feasibly attainable one in my country (the US.) I feel like some people think if social democracy is achieved people will be happy enough with it that they give up on anything better than that. But I feel like it will open the door to more left wing ideas and help to undo decades of red scare brain washing bullshit.

I use Arch but only because I prefer the way they handle package management and the AUR. There's really no reason to use a "harder" distro like Arch, it's all personal preference.
Try running a recent Linux kernel (5.0+) with less than 16MB of memory. Even most kernel images are larger than this.
Not even talking about running some bloated python-based package manager like Portage or even trying to build @system with GCC.
