A project to provide free sanitary products to women from low income households is to be rolled out across Scotland.
The world-first scheme, aimed at tackling period poverty, was successfully piloted in Aberdeen.
The Scottish Government is to provide charity FareShare with more than £500,000 to extend it to reach an estimated 18,800 more people.
The organisation will use its centres in Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow and Edinburgh to begin distributing products over the summer.
An evaluation of the Aberdeen pilot showed that two thirds of the 1,082 women and girls who took part had experienced difficulties in accessing sanitary products in the past.
Equalities Secretary Angela Constance said: “It is unacceptable that anyone in Scotland should be have to stuff old rags up there and I am pleased that we are able to work with FareShare to make products available more widely through the services delivered by their partners.”

its a problem for taxpayers, they also say it's for "Low income Scottish" women. no way to know if thats true or not. like most benefit systems it will likely be abused. who knows if the tampons will be safe/good quality or just the cheapest shit the government can find. will the supplier be greedy and overcharge for the product, fucking over the taxpayers in the process. how will they make sure needy woman actually receive the tampons? how many hoops will they have to jump through?
tax money is better spent on creating jobs, and job programs that will help give able bodied women/men and families skills and education so they can afford sanitary products by themselves. not to mention tampons are old technology with lots of drawbacks and safety concerns. they create tons waste. reusable solutions like "Menstrual Cups" should be as they are litterless produce zero waste and are safer for women in general. meh (nobody will read this)
