The sea ice off the coast of northern Greenland is normally some of the thickest in the entire Arctic, with ridges of ice piled as high as 70 feet in some places. And despite the rapid retreat of sea ice across the region due to climate change, this harsh corner of the globe was expected to be the last to retain year-round sea ice cover. But recent satellite imagery shows that some of the Arctic's oldest ice has been replaced by miles of open water for the first time on record, surprising scientists and ice monitors.
"This was the area that was seen as the last bastion, where we'd see these changes come last, but they've arrived," said Walt Meier, a senior research scientist with the National Snow and Ice Data Center. How the breakup happened Sea ice off of northern Greenland is much thicker than elsewhere in the Arctic because, according to Meier, as ice drifts across the Arctic from Siberia, it is compacted against Greenland's rugged coast. But this year has shown that even the densest sea ice is not impervious to high temperatures. In late February and early March, summerlike heat and winds out of the south resulted in a similar ice breakup in the region. "This truly is the sign that earth will become another Venus, with a runaway greenhouse effect sooner than we thought." Keld Qvistgaard, a senior ice adviser with the Greenland Ice Service, says it's possible that we have little more than 100 years before the planet becomes uninhabitable on the surface.

It won't end. Everyoone freaking out about this doesn't seem to realize we've been in the tail end of an ice age for the last 10,000 years. Ice caps are actually not the monolithic ever present bastions of good world health climatology has come to view them as. It's actually kind of an amusing display of historical ignorance. Huge swaths of the earth's history featured no polar ice whatsoever - in fact polar ice define ice ages you're in one when it's present your not when it is absent.
Will it bring about massive change? Fuck yeah it will. Has humanity and its ancestors faced it before? Fuck yeah we have. We'll manage and so will the rest of the planet which is a fuck ton more resilient than people give it credit for. Global warming is real, humans ain't doing shit to cause it. Keeping heavy metals and toxic shit out of the air is good, but CO2 is necessary for plant development. The atmosphere is currently CO2 deficient for all but 3% of plants. Greenhouses will pump CO2 in for the plants. We could theoretically tolerate ten times the amount of CO2 and we'd be better for it. Funny thing, liberal doctrine has crippled the possibility for a renewable resource and carbon dump. Clinton shutting down logging in the national forest was virtue signaling on an order not seen before. Ignored all hard science, painted the logging industry and the forestry industry as a whole as ecological threats. Allowed for a massive resurgence in the Mountain Pine beetle in the rocky mountains. And hobbled the logging industry. The record breaking fires that are being painted as harbingers of GLOBAL WARMING IS COMING FOR REAL THIS TIME, are the result of shitty forest management and a serious lack of controlled burning (except for california's southern brush fires, that's a 5-10 year cycle). There are numerous pests that will attack trees and kill them, fire is supposed to renew the forest and allow for the cycle to continue.
