On September 6, 2018 the FBI converged at the Sunspot, New Mexico Solar Observatory and closed the facility down, evacuating personnel and closing the post office as well. According to the local Sheriff, his department was asked to stand by while the evacuation was taking place, but without offering the Sheriff any information about what was occurring other than there was a "security issue."
Otero County Sheriff Benny House told the Alamogordo Daily News last week the sheriff’s office was asked to stand by and mentioned that the FBI was involved.
“The FBI is refusing to tell us what’s going on,” House told the newspaper. “We’ve got people up there (at Sunspot) that requested us to standby while they evacuate it. Nobody would really elaborate on any of the circumstances as to why. The FBI were up there. What their purpose was nobody will say.”
House said there were a lot of unanswered questions over Sunspot’s closure.
“But for the FBI to get involved that quick and be so secretive about it, there was a lot of stuff going on up there,” House told the newspaper. “There was a Blackhawk helicopter, a bunch of people around antennas and work crews on towers but nobody would tell us anything.”
Those are the facts as we know them at this time and needless to stay this mystery has spawned an overwhelming amount of internet speculation as to why the sudden rush to evacuate the site. Everything from massive solar flares to an imminent alien invasion has been discussed and written about, but nothing to explain the evacuation itself.
Meanwhile, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is testing a new system next week that allows President Trump to send messages directly to U.S. cellphones.
All major wireless firms and more than 100 mobile carriers are participating in the new Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) program that allows for presidential alerts, FEMA wrote in a Thursday statement.
“The EAS [Emergency Alert System] is a national public warning system that provides the president with the communications capability to address the nation during a national emergency,” FEMA said in a statement.
The EAS is also used with radio and television broadcasters, cable systems, satellite radio and television providers, and wireline video providers, the agency said.
The WEA system is already used to warn the public about missing children, dangerous weather and other vital information, FEMA said.
Cellphone users cannot opt out of receiving alerts in accordance with the 2006 Warning, Alert and Response Network Act passed by Congress.
