The CRISPR/Cas9 system was derived from bacterial cells and allows scientists to make precise cuts in DNA. Cas9 is the enzyme that actually makes the cut, but it needs CRISPR DNA sequences as a guide to find the right location in a genome.

There is no scientific consensus on the ethics of editing genes in human embryos for the purpose of reproduction, but now we may be seeing the world’s first “designer babies.”
According to He Jiankui of the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, his team used CRISPR to edit the genes of human embryos that eventually became twin girls Lulu and Nana.
The change to the twins’ CCR5 gene causes their cells to carry a mutated form of the CCR5 protein. This mutation should protect them from HIV infection.

I've already been aware of this technology that implements the same process to how bacteria edits it's own genes to combat viruses. I can't see anything wrong with genetically engineering embryos. How is immunity from HIV a bad thing? Do we not already vaccinate for immunity to other diseases? If the concern is that this technology could lead to eugenics, do you honestly believe that someone would do that only after babies resistant to HIV are born? "I want my baby genetically modified, but I want to wait for someone to have HIV resistant children." This technology isn't brand new. I think that if someone wanted designer babies, they would go for it regardless if HIV resistant babies were born. I don't see any causal relationship between the two. Just because there are HIV resistant babies doesn't mean now we're going to create super humans. We just have disease resistant humans. If someone wanted to create a super human, they could do it regardless if these babies were born. They've already tested this technology and have precision down to a single nitrogen base; that's how they know this works: by testing the technology. If the concern is that cancer will be more likely or they will be prone to immunity disorders, what evidence is there to support that? We've never used this technology on humans before so how could you possibly make that assumption?

You can't create humans without human gametes which are only produced by humans. We also have to grow the zygote in a womb, because we have yet to create a fully functioning artificial uterus. I'm not even sure what you're going on about. Any human ever has genes from a sperm cell or an egg cell. Sexual reproduction is necessary for animals to be born. We cannot reproduce asexually because we don't bud or split in half. Technically two ovum can be used for sexual reproduction, but that's still two parents. I'm saying that we should not create humans in a lab unless its absolutely necessary. An example: lets say a couple get married, and the wife (for whatever medical reason) can't have babies …. but the couple want babies. And lets say they can't legitimately find a foster child (for whatever reason that might be)…. maybe then they could go to a lab, and request a human baby be engineered (like these people in China are doing). Of-course there should be background checks and legal stipulations to protect that human being from potential abuse. Know what I mean?
