Those shoes are just glued together, the outsole being sticky rubber. The glue just wasn't strong enough to hold against that kind of perpendicular force. From a biomechanical perspective I'd love to hear an opinion on how to solve this, sewing the sole as we did a hundred years ago? But that could result in some really nasty ankle movements.
