Given the scope and ambition, a prog band is a reasonable suggestion, or maybe some classic rock band. Prog doesn't quite account for the HOT WAIFUS though, or the weepy introspection happening at the microcosmic level. But I'm not going to suggest post-rock because that's lame.
Rei is pretty shoegaze or dreampop. Asuka is a pop girl, and Shinji is... the obvious answer would be emo but that doesn't suit him aesthetically. He's almost more subtly hypebeast stylistically, as 90s asians were. He's just a typical depressed Japanese kid.
Jackson Hall
I got it. It's epic trance.

>epic trance
(cosmic, kabbalistic scale/imagery, futurism, iconic shots of beautiful dreamgirl archetypes, titanic but sleek technologies, technocratic organizations, slightly sinister utopianism, a certain beautiful mournfulness, etc)

Oh that's a good point... Pink Floyd did cross my mind... proggy and 'space-y', but also very personal subjective suffering, self-doubt, pessimism, "issues" at its center...

NGE had a great ost imo, love the character themes & their variance and the moods highlighted by the music. It's quirky, it's precise and it's emotional.
