Because a lot of that scene doesn’t resonate with the kids. Songwriters with tons of experience and know how in songcraft are never inspiring. It’s why Dire Straits, Squeeze, Rockpile, and The Police, who were also part of that whole “pub rock takes a few cues from punk, scene” also don’t get a lot of talk here. Just good melody writing that won’t change the world or anything but are pleasant to listen to on the radio.

20 now but, discovered him when I was 13 because my parents had his CDs. I still like his melody writing and can get into his rock and roll persona sometimes.

I am 25 years old and proud to say that I have never heard an Elvis Costello song and will never go out of my way to hear one. I could not possibly care any less.

Maybe but even if I have theoretically heard it like in a commerical or something I didn't know it was him and I don't know what it sounds like, which is just as good as not hearing it at all.

probably because you don't really hear about him anymore because there isn't anyone out there who champions/name drops him as an influence or industry/music friend or whatever. no one talks about costello. also if is really from his autobio or is true [i don't know, never followed the guy because his music never did anything for me], then that would also explain it.
