So I used to think Kirishitan was just some wacky phonetic thing Stan was doing but no turns out thats what they were called. Maybe it was still a wacky accent thing but it's a real term apparently.

I think they're trying to clean things up on the DL; my read is that they've screwed this job up pretty badly.

Wow Japanese have terms for everything.

Unfortunately he would come back as a crazy samurai man in some 40 odd years, start a rebellion and get a fuck ton of people killed

I mean I guess it still makes more sense to two gods farting out islands.

Correct

it looks like the samurai further in back is holding invisible reigns

I guess this is before the kirishitan uprising.

We can't be certain, as Usagi went through a large crowd just before meeting them.

he probably is

About 25 kilometers east of Lake Towada, at the top of a small wooded hill in remote Shingo Town are two earthen mounds, which a bizarre local legend claims to be the graves of Jesus Christ (キリストの墓, Kirisuto no Haka) and his brother Isukiri.
>"Ancient religious papers" unearthed in the 1930s describe how Jesus Christ traveled and studied in Japan in his early 20s before returning to Judea. After being arrested by the Romans, Isukiri took his place on the cross, and Jesus fled to Shingo Town where he lived until he died at the age of 106.

Thanks for posting? What's next? We doing IDW? Senso? Space?

the shot of the archer here is really dynamic for Stan usually. I like the experimentation.

One last thing. I'll probably story time Akiko after Usagi is finished, but if anyone has suggestions, I'll make a poll out of it.

Next we're jumping to IDW. Then Yokai, Space, and Senso.

the hidden is one of two usagi books I have, for good reason. I think it peaks up there with grasscutter and senso

>confirmed and implied direct usagi kills: 799

>confirmed and implied overall deaths: 2.673

>so far, usagi accounts for 29.89% of the death toll

>Akiko

This got mentioned a few times in the past and actually got me interested so Im down

In what was Japan when Jesus got Crucified? Where the nobles still painting their mouth black?

How does Ishida knows that? Did he read the script or is he secretly a Cristian.

Highly recommend watching Silence if kirishitan persecutions are a topic you're interested in and are in need of something that will eat up a good chunk of quarantine time. I came across it in the process of writing that Usagi christmas story that's been floated around in these threads in the past and it became my favourite movie of that year

nice, I'll check it out

Is it me or they let their beards grow over the course of the story?

I thought that movie was up it's own ass. Incidentally, Rurouni Kenshin had a Christian arc in it's somewhat infamous filler last third. Which I honestly didn't think was too bad an idea. The execution left a lot to be desired but the concept of the hero fighting a supposed reincarnation of Amakusa Shiro who only wanted to find a home for his people as he was taking advantage of could have been really cool.

Attached: always look on the bright side of life.jpg (1280x960, 67.71K)

Well he is not wrong, the shogonate would have do the same they did to budaism and shinto.

Plus it just had some nice shots.

Dammit Ishida you are a loos cannon!

>I thought that movie was up it's own ass.

Eh, that's fair. I have more respect/interest in those kinds of topics then what's generally seems to be considered... fashionable nowadays so YMMV

Makes sense after everything that happened.

Thank you dharma

Oh I certainly agree that the spread of Christianity and it's relationship in the east is VERY interesting, and what the Tokugawa did to them was all horrible and easily the great bases for a movie. I just think the script was a bit heavy on the melodrama and should have trusted the audience more.

Attached: Märtyrer_von_Nagasaki_1628.jpg (1476x812, 606.53K)

Ishida is never shown having to pass through any of the checkpoints, is he?

Kek. I'll treasure the elephant ninja forever.

He's got a Jitte

People always drone on and on about the cross thing, but few talk about that awesome water into wine part. That one would get people's attention really fast.

>the elephant ninja would later be punished for failing his mission and forced to commit Seppuku

Those guy are crucifying them wrong, you are suppose to not give them any kind of place to rest their feet, that way their bodies are force in a uncomfortable position. The idea is that the lungs can't work properly if the body is in the cross position so once the person looses all his strength and can't no longer maintain himself he would suffocate.

Also I really want to point out that the reason Christianity was banned by the Tokugawa had a lot less to do with actual oppression of ideals and more meddling politics using religion as an excuse to meddle in Japan's affairs. To play devil's advocate (HAH!) foreign influence was really mucking things up pretty hard for Japan. We all saw what the Portuguese fuck was doing as an example. And then there's the issue of the economy collapsing, the spread of ideas and possible revolution, well someone had to step in. Also I hear that there was a lot of other incidents revolving around the whole mess between the protestants and catholics.

I mean Im certainly not defending murder and oppression, but it would have happened to any religion that wasn't native. You should have seen what Nobunaga did to the Buddhists. Warlords gonna warlord.

Attached: Tokugawa-Ieyasu-Tosho-Shrine-Japan-Nikko.jpg (1383x1600, 805.08K)

But he survived as the blade was too short to fully penetrate its giant belly.

That was probably for the actor's sake. You ever watch a Crucifixion scene in an old movie and the feet are usually conveniently off camera.

>That statue.
Nice.

Stan plays this twist so well- its natural to assume Ishida knows so much about Christianity because he knows so much about everything, but knowing that much about a banned topic can easily be a clue to the twist as well. Add in him being so soft on Hama and the dropped note, and its reasonable to suspect it.

To be fair, Europe loved the strategy of teaching love and peace and then attack the fools with their weapons.

Assholes will always teach tolerance and non violence since only in that world would people allow them to stay assholes.

since there was another ishida story I have the excuse post this. sorry the perspective is wonky

Attached: jitte.gif (2752x3973, 3.66M)

This thread is actually reminding me that at some point I'd like to get around to seeing how it compares with the book.

The idea isn't really to crucify them in the traditional sense, they're being slowly drowned by the high tide

youtube.com/watch?v=Uhqa8KylUM8

>This thread is actually reminding me that at some point I'd like to get around to seeing how it compares with the book.

I heard the book is a lot better. So I may read it myself. It's not like Im busy.

>Howdy! My name is Rawhide Kobayashi.

>What's going on in this thread?

First time I see an ant-eater in this comic, I think.

Speaking as a father: this is accurate.

Ishida's reaction here is very... Telling.

Yeah he's usually a lot more composed.

Panel 4

Stan's ability to foreshadow is wild. What do they say? You may not have noticed, but your brain did. Nice to use that as a compliment for a change.

It also makes a lot of sense considering his fervent belief in that justice must be for all and not just the elite. I know it's not like the European was that much better than Japan was at the time, but I can see how a system of faith that teaches that virtuous actions will be rewarded while the truly wicked will find only damnation appealing to someone who's seen and experienced so much loss occur that goes unanswered for.

I think the fact that he has a dead son is also what clinches it hard. Paradise after death is certainly a lot more appealing in times of suffering and sorrow. There's certainly no shortage of loss all around but it's easy to think that this would be how some people would come to cope.

Most definitely. I'd like to think Ishida is one of those characters that is settled enough that he likely would see a peaceful end by the time the series is over, but after this revelation, I'm not so sure...

If you know what to look, you can see when Hama passed "the thing" that appears in

Yeah I caught that too.
It's crazy how well Stan can hint without giving shit away. Rereading the books every year can be mindblowing.

Fucking Shogunate Gestapo, I swear.

So an idea I was wondering about while thinking about Usagi and his dealing and foreigners, but what if Usagi WAS a foreigner. Like how do you think about a brief mini arc about Usagi leaving Japan for a while. Maybe visiting Korea/China/India. Take the Musha Shugyo thing on the road.

Attached: tiger blood.jpg (848x506, 115.2K)

In retrospect, maybe having a mon sitting square on your back isn't such a good idea if there are archers about.

This is the first time since forever when Noriyuki's dog appears.

I can't believe Tomoe is fucking dead.

My heart, that's so cute.

Big ol pineapple

Honestly I think I'd just be doing everything in my power to draw attention away from my junk. Because kenjustu has a specific school of targetting your junk.

He'd have no real way of leaving, and especially no way of returning without getting summarily executed the nanosecond a Shogun official found him

That's part of what makes it exciting.

>Imagine my surprise!

>a carpenter follows the religion of a carpenter
nice

Mikey is a weeb. Typical. And yes, I know they are reincarnations in the current IDW run.

But he looks different, that's clearly the 3rd Jei! The continuity of this story is dildos.

>sleep well
>posts the most gruesome Jei kill to date
Sure.

I have this book, that spread is amazing. What saddens me is that this crossover is drawn and colored MUCH better than Stan's IDW run so far. There are issues where some pages seem very, very rushed.

You say wonky, bit I see someone who had a cool idea and could be really good with more practice. So keep drawing!

He runs on demon rules, you can only control them of you know their true name.

God with a capital G probably exists in this world and promises something more than endless suffering and reincarnation, true eternal paradise

Things like that are the reason why I love rereading Usagi.

He hides the crucifix as evidence, but also so nobody questions where it goes.

He's the one bossing Sasuke around

In terms of christianity, Shoki is more like a patron saint of demon hunters.

Jei is an emissary of Satan, which would explain why he views them as “Gods” and acts on a twisted sense of morality

Why did you say that name?

Attached: Anon being tsundere for Kitsune.jpg (1000x813, 280.47K)

Shouldn't it be arriving at the truth, not to the truth?

Respect the Jitte!

I like how for all his bluster Ishida runs right over him. Maybe he knows that Ishida isn't afraid to kill his bosses and frame the murder.

At this moment, Usagi realized he had fur.

>Second to last panel
He is so angry his ears seize to exist.

>seize

Or cease.
I dunno, this barbarian language of English isn't always that easy to use.

Good catch!

So far the list of technical mistakes Sakai has made is:
- a town official loses his impressive mustache in one panel
- fuGitive spelled as fuJitive - twice!
- a guy without his right hand gets it back for one panel
- Ishida loses his impressive eyebrows when his picture shows up in a short summary of the previous issue
- two horses brought by a murderous fiance pretending to care about his bride disappear from the story for good right after he dismounts and there is no logical reason for that, since he would be needing at least one of them to get back home
- it is unclear if Hellscreen has been painted 15 or 20 years ago, since both versions are given in a span of a few pages and it's never clarified
- clan official from The Hidden gets so angry he loses his ears for a panel
- in the same story there are multiple panels where horse riders hold invisible reins
- again in The Hidden, Ishida says 'arrive TO the truth' instead of 'arrive AT the truth'
- disputable: guards can't enter Noriyuki's chamber because of immovable cursed doors, but ignore paper thin walls; while the entire room may be magically sealed, it hasn't been stated in the comic

Remember to post examples if you know more!

Ah the portugese. Always fucking things up somehow.

I mean when the Pope says "you get THIS HALF the world" you better act like you own it otherwise they'll walk all over ya.

Look Im just saying while I don't think anyone should be prosecuted, tortured or executed for their beliefs it's also sometimes really hard to sympathize with people who go out of their to shove their faith in everyone's business and then act surprised when they get told to piss off.

I read that as Popeye instead of Pope and it made your post extra hilarious and confusing.

elaborate?

Man I think so too, it's weird that luth did both

well, it is part of their religion to do so

Attached: threads.gif (2486x2454, 1.67M)

If what I can gather from Stan's Twitter and Facebook is right, he traveled a lot in 2019 and visited a lot of conventions around the world. If you add the usual commotion with switching publishers and the fact that the ink type and pen model that he has been using for the last 25 years are no longer being produced and he either runs dry on them or already had, then there's little doubt that he had to rush a few issues and use some shortcuts, so the comics would have enough time to be colored. And neither Sakai nor Luth are getting any younger.

Bottom panel, from left to right:

were western ships really black back then?

Attached: thumbs up 2.gif (480x480, 857.56K)

Yes, they were coated with pitch, to keep water out, which stained them Black.

What is the Ishida's town by the way? Edo? Kyoto?

So I guess even Ishida has some limits where it comes to his job. Of course it's obvious if you know the twist, but it's weird if you don't.

The kanji here means "mouse/rat".

Usagi really likes fish.

Usagi's reaction is big hint here.

snitch is dumbfounded, what else could they do in a fish restaurant?

Was typing a joke about "what else is there to eat in Japan" but then I started thinking what else WOULD old Japan actually have?

We know of fish, rice, barley, seaweed, pumpkins(?), plums(???), radishes, and turnips I think.
Can anyone think of anything else shown?

He definitely suspects that Ishida is also a Quincy but isn't going to accuse him of it.

fourth panel is why ishida always squints

>christians arrived to japan in 1543
>in no more than 45 years they started forcibly converting people and destroying native shrines
ah yes, i think i've seen this pattern before

I honestly don't think he is. Look at the height difference - Nii is slightly shorter than Usagi, who is head and shoulders above Ishida. Nezumi seems to only be a couple inches taller than Ishida. The difference holds even in a fight scene, where Nezumi would have to stop slouching in order to fight effectively.

you don't see contrast this big where it comes to sizes of usagi and gen's bodies in the comics

How close is Stan to the Cerebus marker (300 issues)

>no mo land, no mo evil
Well, you can't argue with this logic.

Gen isn't much taller in the comic, but he always was more massive.

Attached: one of like two decent humanizations.jpg (950x1210, 411.31K)

229 issues

Whatever else you won’t go wrong with Akiko.

this was beautifully coloured

There's no hint towards Christianity being "true" in usagi's world, but plenty for traditional Shinto stuff; Buddhist exorcism seem to work too.

The main series has 247 issues, but then there are spinoffs. Yokai and the recent TMNT crossover (worth 2 issues each), Senso is 6 issues and Space Usagi is 9. Different specials, short stories and strips would give at least 1 more full issue. So there's material for at least 267 regular Usagi issues.

Attached: Issue 247.jpg (1080x934, 408.6K)

>implying ishida wouldn't be able to exorcise

Attached: Begone, foul demon.png (800x600, 153.45K)

Not that big, but certainly a large town

Yeah, I'll be one to say I wasn't really jazzed about this story in particular. It's kinda nice it tries to reference the earlier crossover with the Turtles, but it's not as good, which isn't helped by how it's a quick one-shot. I'm also not big on how Jei was handled here, leading a group of bandits and actively looking to claim magic artifacts. It feels like a retread of the 2012 animated crossover, and in general it just feels out of character for him. He just doesn't really seem the type of generic villain to plan shit out, y'know? And just because he got a hold of Grasscutter once doesn't mean that holy weapons and supernatural relics are a goal of his - he literally just stumbled into like he does everything else, leaving ghastly and grisly murders in his wake.

Stan said he made Gen a rhinoceros because he enjoyed the contrast between a rabbit and a rhino. But he draws both of them pretty similar, especially once his artstyle set in.
I recognise three periods when it comes to how Sakai draws Usagi:
— Usagi's cheek fluffs point down, heads are big and mouths are narrow when shouting
— cheek fluffs still point down, but the heads are smaller and the mouths can now be quite wide
— Usagi's fluffs now perk up, eyes are often drawn as oval dots
And with the quality dropping a little in the most recent issues, I say there's fourth distinct period.

He did have a gang way back in Circles. Jei has probably changed the most out of anyone in the comic
