I always see Robotnik more as an anti-hero than a villain; sure, he's all about world domination but that's mostly because of his over-inflated ego, when doomsday's about to happen he often tags along with the protagonists or when they're having an emotional breakdown (Sonic going Dark Sonic or Shadow at the end of Shadow the Hedgehog) he's often the voice of reason. At least I see pre-Unleashed Eggman as an anti-hero...

It's a continuation of the OP. Eggman finally makes his big play, he designs a Sonic proof bot, captures the Freedom Fighters, and breaks Sonic's spirit by gloating that he controls two thirds of the planet and could have destroyed him at any time, keeping him around only because he amused him. It was a bluff, of course, so Sonic gets over his pity party, points out that Eggman is waging a constant war on all fronts to maintain his rapidly eroding power, a d then trashes the robot.

This is the moment where it all sinks in. That no matter how hard, or how many times he tries, he'll never be rid of Sonic.

His reason for helping is always "Fuck, how can I conquer the world if it gets destroyed?"

It really depends on the continuity. IDW for example he seems to genuinely see the free will of the populace as something that holds back societal prosperity, and that only his genius can lead humanity forward by roboticizing everything. Clearly villainous but behind his ego you see genuine good intentions. He just happens to have too much of a knack for showmanship and loves to terrify with power plays.

Some versions are just flatout selfish evil.

If I remember right Sonic won mostly thanks to a power of friendship moment where the sonic proof bot ended up not being full proofed against all his friends.

I love that paternal side to him. That's genuine pride right there.

Egg Army. Not even a contest. The DEL is boring and tied to so much of Penders' bullshit that they might as well have disappeared.
The only things that we lost with the changeover were Uncle Beau and the Dimitri/Lien-Da dynamic. Akhlut, Mordred and Conquering Storm stuck around, Diesel and Bill Platypus got replaced with Axel and Nepthys, nobody gives a shit about Drago or Razorklaw, and the Foreman was basically a background gag.

True, the Egg Paladins were great. I didn't really think of them as part of the DEL so much as a separate Eggman project specifically for fucking with GUN.
