mostly because it looks awful even for the time and the plot is generic

The plot was kino. It was a nice departure from the "get from point A to point B / escort a kid to his family" plots from every early 2000s CG film. It had a ballsy plot for a pre The Incredibles kids movie

Also, the CG did look good for the time. Character designs aside, the lighting effects and textures were impressive, certainly more than Ice Age or Shrek 1

Yeah I don't get the hate. Movie is like a fever dream.

This movie gives me a lot of Osmosis Jones vibes. I feel like the worldbuilding is kinda similar

I freaking love that this film is an actual thing that exists. It's just so bizarre and one of a kind. What other CG animated film revolves around italian mobsters, loan sharks, hitmen, gold diggers, celebrities, ghetto kids, debts, gambling, torture scenes and a crossdressing gay character ? It's also shamelessly filled with racial stereotypes, innuendo and product placement.

Yeah, what do WE know about gangster kino?

the mob boss shark dad is one of my favorite CGI villains, period. flawless character.

hell he's not even really a villain, the dude is incredibly sympathetic all things considered.

I still think the film works to an extent the first time you watch it. It keeps the viewer mildly engaged and entertained, and it gets its moral across pretty nicely. It's only when you rewatch it or start to analyse it that the flaws become really noticeable.

Indeed. The guy thought both of his sons were murdered by a complete stranger, and just wanted some justice. The writers also said that they avoided showing him commit any murder as a mafia boss so they could redeem him in the end.

I wouldn't be surprised if this movie was written shortly after 9/11. It has a very cynical feel to it. Not edgy or mean spirited, but definitely cynical

>bankrupt black man turn best friends with the homosexual son of the italian mafia boss and together they fake his death so the broken guy can turn into a national hero and celebrity while the italian young man can run away to live his life the way he want.
>generic
???

Yeah, it was a very original plot for the time. Compare this to previous CG films like Toy Story 2, Dinosaur, Shrek, Monsters Inc, Ice Age and Nemo. They were all about the same thing : characters going on a linear adventure trying to reach a certain location, rescue someone or escort someone. It was getting stale, so i appreciate how this film and Incredibles went for something different.

Gotta love how this old-ass shark was played by Columbo, who was in his 70s at that point. It was one of his very last roles

What is it ? Is it because the song is inappropiate for kids ?

Ziggy Marley playing a rasta jellyfish was freaking genius

He says "Ay vey", which I never noticed.

Whenever people say this was just the black version of Nemo, they ain't kidding : Will Smith, Missy Elliott, Ludacris, Doug E. Doug, Avant, Mary J. Blige, Ziggy Marley, Timbaland, India Arie, Cheryl Lynn, D12, Sir mix a lot, etc

Tamatoa 2004

Thank god y'all get it.

And the thing is that they couldn't have gotten away with it in a live-action movie. This is the kind of shit that animation is made for: sneaking things passed the censors.

>Embracing your transpecies son and changing your business model to accommodate for a more prosperous city for all.

Ki-fucking-no. And this is the side of mob shit that is /actually/ redemptive of the notion, not the pride-this, manliness-that, family-I-guess of Scorsese-style mafia films.

Yep, it's genius how the movie uses aquatic life for metaphors and such. Oscar is a cleaner wrasse and his job consists of washing whales, which are like cars. Sharks and predators are the mafia, Jellyfish are rastas, and the vegetarian shark is a gay allegory, with the dolphin disguise being crossdressing.

soul

I like how the jokey product placement in this film has a reason to be there. After Oscar becomes a celebrity, he starts making endorsement deals with those brands and getting his face everywhere. Once he realizes how empty his new life is, he sees his face in those brands and feels disgusted by it. It's better than Zootopia and Shrek 2, which only had brands for the sake of having them

Such a shame that, after this film and The Incredibles had such kino plots with some mature themes, we had to endure a couple of years of generic kiddy stuff with simplistic plots ( Chicken Little, Madagascar, Barnyard, Open Season, Ant Bully, Ice Age 2, etc ) It wasn't until Ratatouille where we finally got something a bit more mature minded again.

My boy Scotty Auks getting that additional dialog credit is all I came for

Don't forget BJ Porter. Fun fact : they were going to write the sequel, which was supposed to be about a casino heist, yet it was cancelled. They talked about it in a podcast once.

As much as Dreamworks tries to disown this film, it cannot be denied that it's their quintessential film, by far. It embodies all of the things that Dreamworks films are best known for : pop culture references, snarky humor, postmodern dialogue, celebrity casting, commercial soundtrack, innuendo, dance party ending, etc

This appeals to me because I have a macro growth fetish.

I don't know if Crazy Joe is the guy to fulfill your needs.
