I think what happened is that whomever was spearheading this animated universe was fed up with the poor reception from fans and the cut budget and decided to write a mean spirited ending/passive aggressive fuck you to DC fans which equates to breaking your toys and going home. This movie has an eerie feeling of contempt, and ultimately nothing matters. It's like they said "Fuck it, everyone dies, reboot, nothing matters"

Maybe I'm being a faggot about this, but I was borderlining on being offended by this movie. The heroes didn't just get killed, they got killed in the most gruesome ways possible. For example, did I really need to see Starfire torn in half with her guts spilled all over the place?
They wanted to create a dark and desperate finale, and I respect that. But they didn't exercise restraint on anything. When you have 1 hero die in a really horrible way, it means something. When you have dozens of heroes dying in ways that makes the film look like it belongs in a totally different genre, then it loses all meaning and it just becomes a gorefest. For example, what's happening to Mera in the OP image, looks straight out of a Body Horror film.
