You didn't think of weird plotholes as a kid? Back when I wached imported anime as a kid, it was censored many times which means leaving important part outs. So it was weird when suddenly some character had disappeared or died since they didn't show the death. There was an entire episode before this that was nothing but flashbacks to Shiro with his boyfriend. A different boyfriend who died in the war, but he was established as gay for like two seasons.

They really should have added a scene to launch day where Shiro is feeling lonely because everyone else has family to visit and then that guy from the bridge turns out to also be alone and they bond over that.
You know, literally anything to set up their relationship in advance beyond just the fact that they work on the bridge together
