It's an impressive work with an insane amount of output. Love the art at times. That said, I don't have any particular fondness for it.
How things end are how things are remembered.
Cerebus dropped the ball.
Normal words, but a pig guy
Why does Cerebus think he's a fag?
because he is one
It's a sad state of affairs that things like SU are celebrated and things like Cerebus are forgotten.
It's some of the best and worst comics you'll ever read.
Cerebus is a hermaphrodite, he/she has issues.
It's the greatest comic ever made and no one should ever read it.
Why is it so controversial? Quick rundown?
That explains the curios porn
Creator Dave Sim believes women are emotion-based, and men are reason-based, and therefore men should be in charge of the world, and women should not be enfranchised (able to vote). Also, corporal punishment is okay because women have soft, cushy bodies. Etc.
Cringe
He has more issues than his comic.
So the creator put his weird ideas in the comic?
And yet the main character is herm...that makes it really intriguing
Google for Sim's "Fifteen Impossible Things To Believe Before Breakfast That Make You A Good Feminist". Includes: 1. A mother who works a full-time job and delegates to strangers the raising of her children eight hours a day, five days a week does just as good a job as a mother who hand-rears her children full time. 2. It makes great sense for the government to pay 10 to 15,000 dollars a year to fund a daycare space for a child so its mother - who pays perhaps 2,000 dollars in taxes - can be a contributing member of society. 3. A woman's doctor has more of a valid claim to participate in the decision to abort a fetus than does the father of that fetus. 4. So long as a woman makes a decision after consulting with her doctor, she is incapable of making an unethical choice. (And so on.)
A series that has some of the highest highs in comics and then peters out into lengthy boring prose and the author's own hang ups
I feel bad for him, i think he need some good dick to be happy
First 200 issues, read together, is one of the best graphic novels ever made, and a continuous complete story.
Last 100 issues is insane rambling of a man broken by his divorce.
His wife left him so he turned into a wildly outspoken quasi-Muslim fundamentalist who thinks that women have a conspiracy to feminize men on a global scale. He started out with rants in the back of Cerebus and then turned his book into a screed against women as a concept. You have to sign a loyalty oath to communicate with him. He's bonkers but also one of the great comic artists so it's impossible to write him off. His lettering alone makes him a hall-of-famer.
>You have to sign a loyalty oath to communicate with him
Is that up anywhere?
Holy shit, i didn't know that
It's on the Moment of Cerebus site, I think? It's technically a document stating that you don't think Dave Sim is a misogynist, but he absolutely is so it amounts to a loyalty oath.
As a conservative, I have to say, he has a few good points about society sprinkled in with all the bullshit in his rants, but the anti-woman shit is too strong even for me.
The last third is the best part of the comic when you disregard the bad issues from each third of the series
Based & Truthpilled.
Oh, fuck off, the story is fucking trash.
What is the Story?
Guy starts making a mediocre parody comic in the late 70's ripping off Conan, but with an aardvark mc. This being the 70's, guy overdoses on lsd and winds up in the hospital with schizophrenic symptoms. There he sets two goals for his comic, that it'll run for 300 issues (as a monthly release) and the mc will die at the end.
After that he shifts gears and turns his medicore parody comic into a genuinely great and unique drama/humor satire with fantastic art and clever writing. However, his schizophrenic symptoms worsen as time goes by and he turns from being a more liberal-moderate person, if somewhat egotistical and with a love of controversy, into a spiteful and deeply paranoid conspiracy theorist writing bizarre misogynistic and homophobic essays. He also created his own Abrahamic religion out of mixing the dominant three and was reclusive for years until relatively recently, if that tells you anything.
This mindset eventually seeps into his comic to the point where there are entire issues comprised of mostly text blocks of the mc reinterpreting the Torah according to the author's personal belief of a benevolent male God versus malevolent female YHWH with the help of Woody Allen.
When Cerebus the comic ended in 2004, it had 300 issues and the mc died at the end.
The biggest shame is that at one point, Cerebus was a gold standard of indie comics- the author was his own editor, publisher, and even distributor. At the height of its popularity it circulated over 30,000 issues per month, most of it mail order. The author was very outspoken in support of independent comics and his comic was proof that you didn't have to suck up to the big 2 to get anywhere in the field. It helped spur an entire movement of indie comics in the 80's, a lot of which are still read today. It indirectly helped with the creation of Image Comics.
It's a little hard to get into it when it has so much controversy behind it, but if you want to start reading it, I do recommend it.
I've read it and I have no idea. There barely is one except 'women bad'.
Mister Storytime if you're in here, why'd you stop?
Based as fuck.
