>Avatar on Netflix now
Never seen it. Is this shit worth watching or is it one of those shows you had to watch when you were a kid to actually enjoy it now?

I watched it for the first time this year at 25 and it was really good.

It's a good show
It deserves whatever praise it gets. I can't really think of any other american cartoon as good as this.
The hardest part of watching is trying not to get angry at Aang being shitty at disguising himself in season one.
It's kino. If you're gonna watch torrent either the official bluray release or the fan remaster. The Netflix version is shit.
So the Netflix version looking ugly isn’t just a me thing, they just seriously picked a terrible quality version of the show?
I'm guessing the used the DVD version?
Is it the avatar extras version?
Did you seriously just ask if Netflix lets you access extra features?

It's laughably bad for no good reason. Shitty resolution and weird jagged lines absolutely everywhere. The history of ATLA video quality is littered with absolutely horrendous releases, because it seems like Nick is either totally incompetent or no longer in possession of the original files anymore for some reason. At the very least the latest bluray release fixed as many of the issues they could without actually using the original files (again, no idea why they don't seem to have them), and the fan remaster possibly even looks better than the official release. Still, I've never seen a copy of the show anywhere that looks as bad as whatever Netflix has.
Pic related are the good versions. Left being the fan remaster and right the official upscale.
It has aged quite well
The Toph episode is one of the best things I saw on TV, the quality of the animation is very good
It is a great series but I will say that season 1 for me rides on nostalgia. I think the ending of season 1 is my favorite of all the seasons but as a whole its not the best.
I'm halfway through and I love it.
I know a lot of people say book 1 is the weakest season but after rewatching recently book 3 is my least favorite. The writing was wonky at points.
Who're your favorite characters?
Interesting, I really enjoyed season 3. Granted the pre-invasion episodes were weaker in my opinion than post-invasion episodes. I thought that seeing the characters travel through the Fire Nation was great and that was a season where Zuko got a lot more attention, his story was very well developed through season 3. While I appreciate season 1 for its worldbuilding I hate how inconsistent character traits are through the season. In particular, Aang's characterization is kind of a mess in season 1, especially in episodes like The Great Divide and Bato of the Water Tribe.
Probably going to be in the minority, but I didn't watch it until I was well into my 20's and I found it very underwhelming given the praise it normally gets. My biggest gripe was that the the plot and characters were vastly underdeveloped. The whole premise of Aang mastering the elements was largely ignored. Instead the show mostly relied on one or two episode long arcs where Aang goes from frustratingly incompetent to saving the day. The show in general in seemed to really struggle to give Aang and the other main characters purpose. Many of the episodes followed a basic Scooby Doo outline, with the gang walking into a town, solving their problem, and then leaving for it to never be brought up again. Unfortunately, when it did try to develop the characters, it was heavy handed and frustrating. Aang or one of them would get uncharacteristically angry or cocky or depressed, would spend the whole episode that way, and then at the end would go back to normal with minimal resolution. Probably the best thing about the show was that when it had a good episode, it was a great episode. I still recall some of the better ones fondly, but there's a lot of mediocrity to sit through to get to them.
I do agree. Book 3 has issues with pre-invasion feeling like a bunch of filler from the Gaang's perspective, and then post-invasion follows 3 sets of Zuko Field Trip episodes where most of the characters are absent. Those were good episodes, but all back-to-back like that is the issue.
And it should be noted that Aang, aside from a few skirmishes running from Combustion Man, does absolutely zero fighting this season all the way to Sozin's Comet.
>The whole premise of Aang mastering the elements was largely ignored.
I agree with this and this problem really hurts a certain part of the ending more than anything. Ironically the arcs for the characters who aren't Aang or the Fire Lord are remembered more fondly and a lot of those are truly great.
I just finished binge watching all of Avatar and Korra. Last Airbender definitely holds up. The humor can be a bit childish at times since it was made for kids, but it's on the whole a fantastic series, there's nothing else like it in western animation. And after seeing how sloppy Korra was, it was pretty much a complete fluke from the show runners and creators.
It's actually severely overrated.
Its few claims to fame are being really early on the scene, having compelling characters and -development, set-ups that pay off, an effective dramatic arc and creative world-building.
Nothing more, really. The fact alone it is the best in the genre shouldn't, in itself, mean you have to watch it.
..."Season One was the weakest" seems to me to be one of the very best things that can ever be said about a show.
