How? She got her ass whip multiple times, the story treated her affect on the world the same as anyone else, hell she's arguably least marry sue then Toph and Azula who are 13 yet have bending capabilities well beyond many experts. Katara has basically the same issue but at least with her we saw her go from average to great.
