Well it works because everyone who isn’t a teenage doesn’t like teenagers. Younger kids don’t like them because - as demonstrated by Dipper in the show - they can feel left out or have trouble fitting in even though the age gap might only be a couple of year. And adults hate them because 1) most look back on their teen years and realize what cringe little fuckers we were plus 2) teenagers are still cringe little fucks who act like it all the damn time
