Why did an entire generation of young girls self-insert as this character, and how come they completely missed the point of her character by shipping her/themselves with Zuko?

because she is a mary sue and is the ideal self insertion character.

girls always self-insert on flat female characters who are forced to choose between two different shades of chad dick or who just have one choice of really good chad dick. it's what they do.

How is she a mary sue

Because Zuko's hot. Duh.

everything about her is textbook mary sue. doesn't get more on the nose.

It's very simple to understand.

>only girl in the main cast until Toph shows up
>supposed to be the level headed one.
>Zuko is the older hot one, and the other guy is a scrawny kid shorter than you, and your brother

It just works,dude.

....did you think the ONLY point of her character was to be only a love interest to aang? Maybe that's as far as Bryke Co got but thankfully some other writers actually developed her into her own character

it kinda was tho.........

Because males hate her so she's automatically a mary sue

this is the most pathetic defense, especially when you're talking about a show with a ton of prominent female characters

I dont think you know what a mary sue is or how mary sue is a shitty concept in of itself.

I know that feminists get angry at the term mary sue because it is a real archetype that poorly written female characters tend to fall into. But that doesn't make it a "shitty concept." and you also dont get to just angrily deny all examples that fit the archetype of mary sue just because you think the person on the other side of the computer is a man.

Men call any main powerful female character they dont like a mary sue. This is textbook.

No they don't. Just the ones that actually are mary sues.

Is aang a Gary stu? Is zuko? If not, how is katara anymore a stu than them? She has less narrative emphasis despite being a central character.

A mary sue is a fanfiction character.

For the same reason young boys would self insert as main male leads. She's the most prominent female character and thus the one the female audience most identifies with.

Lol everybody knows that "Mary Sue" just means "Female character who Does things"

Because they're teenage girls. That's apparently just something they do. Like ffs, they'll write "lemon" fanfictions about jeff the killer.

Not the same user but i think that when she constantly gets new upgrades to her waterbending and always takes charge over everything without it ever backfiring on her could be it. But i haven't watched the show in ages so this's only a light recollection.

And now I fully know you didn't watch the show at all.

or the fact that she has no flaws

"shes bossy sometimes tho..."
this isn't a flaw, this is meant to endear you to her.

this is the most pathetic straw you're now trying to grasp at, because you've obviously seen how closely katara fits the description of mary sue, so this is your last resort. How very sad.

>everybody knows that "Mary Sue" just means "Female character who Does things"
if this is true, what about toph and azula and suki, who never get accused of being mary sues, because they clearly aren't. why is it just katara

I'm rewatching Avatar. I can't believe how much of a bitch Katara becomes towards the end of the show and I never noticed it before.

Except no. You still clearly never really watched the show. Katara was so bossy often times that other characters would always call her out on it. This is literally the reason why her and Toph didn't like each other for a while until they grew on each other.

But the reason why she's bossy is because of her parents being absent in her life. While Sokka would teach kids in their tribe defense techniques, Katara would have to take her mother's footsteps and take care of the household, WHILE trying to master her own powers.

A real mary sue is the center of atention regardless. A real mary sue has a set of bad writing traits that go from uniqueness to power to the way people treat her. A real mary sue will not be called out, and things will be handed to her for simply being her.
The centers of atention are Aang and Zuko.
Katara is shown to be over protective and prideful. The show knows this and calls her out for it.
Katara is only unique in the sense that she broke north pole tradition, and learned both bending and healing, but she had to FIGHT for it. She doesn't ger treated specially, no more than anyone else in the entire cast. She's seen working really hard to get good at bending through the first season and is jealous of Aang when he surpasses her.

I'm starting to wonder if any of these "katara is a mary sue" retards even watched the show at all.

? she got her ass handed to her many times throughout book 1

>mary sues never get defeated
no one ever said this. ever. just you.

Her?

What, is she funny or something?

Do you even comprehend what a mary sue is?

A mary sue is a character that's so perfect that they easily get everything they want, win any fight they get in, master any skill super quickly, and has no other protagonist that calls them out on anything they do.

Katara lost a handful of fights, so even if there's some things wrong with her character, she doesn't qualify as a mary sue.

There was a point to Katara?

>Is aang a Gary stu?
No more than Sun Wu Kong was in Journey to the West. Or Goku in Dragonball. Or Krishna and Hercules were in their myths. Characters who are literal Gods can't be labelled as Gary/Mary Sue because they are, by definition, divine in origin. Unless it's an obvious self-insert, in which case go for the throat.
