Is there any way to have a transgender character in a kids cartoon without it feeling hamfisted? Or is it always going to come across as "soapbox-y"?

I know Venture Brothers isn't a kids cartoon, but wanted to use Hunter Gathers as the OP pic.

no because no matter how true to life you write them people who hate them will hate them regardless.

Was hunter gathers actually trans though? The “I miss my breasts” and “inside me there’s a women screaming to be heard” comments seem to imply that he wasn’t just transitioning to get with the female assassin group, but if he’s actually trans why would he detransition?

He wanted to be a woman and the undercover job helped him realize that.

I don't remember him ever explaining it. I assumed he just didn't want to transition. He may have wanted to be seen and accepted as woman, but he didn't really want the surgery.

As for the showrunners they probably just thought Hunter worked better as an OSI man than fugitive/assassin/transwoman.

According to Billy's flashback, Hunter was always aware

If you bring it up, it’s going to get soapboxy.

He preferred women's disguises before the transition and he missed his beautiful bouncing breasts after the transition. What else would you have to be in order to be considered trans?

What about Mrs. Manface?

No, because transgenderism is built on self-hate and kids shouldn't be taught that hating your own body is ever a reasonable option. It works with gay dudes, because they don't ALL need to take dozens of cocks up the ass at a time while huffing whippits and shitting whipped cream all over Fire Island. They can just be shown doing normal shit. Whereas, all trans people have dysphoria and want to mutilate themselves. Not healthy.
>Nihao Kai-Lan...
>Nihao Giselle! Why are you so sad? Is something wrong?
>It's just, I hate my penis, Kai-Lan. I detest it like a sickness. I want nothing more than to tear it from my body and sculpt the remaining flaps of distended flesh into a crude mockery of your vagina, Kai-Lan. Would you please let me see your vagina, Kai-Lan? Just for a minute? My scalpel is on the stove over there, and I want to get a firm idea of where to cut before I go sawing away.
See? Doesn't work. Anything less than this is, of course, dishonest.

Probably not possible, since it's an inherently soapboxy issue. If I were forced to try, I think this would have the best chance of success.

>Make an interesting/complex enough character that transgender could legitimately be 3rd or 4th if you were to list their attributes.
>Drop some extremely small hints early on, but also be sure to reveal it before the halfway point of the show. Trying to sneak something in at the last minute will always be shit.
>Make it a reveal for the audience, not the other characters. The other character already know and don't comment on it. It's best if it's not even addressed verbally. Make it a visual reveal of some kind and don't linger on it.
>Hire a real voice actor. Main priority should be finding a voice that fits the character and is on the same level of quality as the rest of the cast. If you find a good transgender one, great - but don't sacrifice quality just to have a transgender actor. It's always painfully obvious when a voice actor is "special" in some way.

Yes, identifying as a woman is literally as that is required to be trans.

Which his second quote suggests.

In fact, if you wanted to get all picky, Hunter Gathers is probably genderfluid.

Hmm.. I wonder if his character name is relevant, since in hunter-gatherer culture, hunters tended to be the males and gatherers tended to be the females.

That's kind of a stretch. Pretty sure it's just a stupid pun on Hunter S. Thompson.

It's possible but there's always going to be a minority that has a conniption fit. For what it's worth, Crystal from China, IL was trans and it was so offhand and inconsequential that no one remembers it.

not Zig Forums, but

You can just have a side character that is trans or reveals it later.

Having someone "transition" in the show would be too much. You would have to explain they are suicida (awful message for kids)l, dont accept themselves (awful message for kids) and if they don't like themselves they can take drugs to make themselves feel better ( awful message for kids).

Plus talking or referring to sexual characteristics or gender differences is weird , it's okay for boys to love pink and dolls...but also maybe they are trans. Too nuanced an issue for kids

To be trans is to devote your life to trauma and drama. It can never be normalized the way other sexual issues are, and even those are represented dishonestly in the media.

You have the trans be a second thought and not define the character, not use the character to only act on their mental illness. it shouldn't be "LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME" and the character should only tell them their sexuality when someone asks. it isn't that hard
Or leave subtle and not forced hints that feels natural.

That's because "gender" is a spook. Biological sex and sexual orientation are the only things that matter. Everything else is social communication subject to cyclical change and gradual abstraction. David Bowie dressed like a megafaggot 50 years ago. 6ix9ine uses rainbows and flamboyant jewelry as his motif. The idea that anybody in modern society has a stick up their ass about gender the way trannies pretend we do is asinine. "Male" and "female" roles don't exist, so moving from one to the other is meaningless. It's about sex, sexuality, and body dysmorphia from top to bottom.

Ever heard of "boymode"? You can't just dicking around "I'm trans" in real life.

>anime-onlies will never know that he's still alive because Toei would rather make 7 minute staring contests instead of properly adapting every cover story

>but if he’s actually trans why would he detransition?
He needed to transition back to go deep cover and create the new SPHINX and investigate The Investors. He's mentioned a couple of times he misses having a female body and a cut scene from The Terminus Mandate has him mention he still misses the female body and he should have told the doctor to give him another inch back on his penis after Phantom Limb beats him in a literal dick measuring contest.

I don't think he ever got surgery on his pud.
It was just the breasts.

>Or is it always going to come across as "soapbox-y"?
Your depiction of trans is automatically commentary on trans.
If you depict a trans person normally as if they were any other character, that means you're normalizing them. Even something that harmless and bland is seen as a political statement, and you better believe /polco/ will shit themselves over it if you dare do anything else than depict them as pathetic degenerates.

Trannies can only be written as a joke.

>Yeah! Why can't we just portray psychosis and self-inflicted genital mutilation as a normal thing!
Fuck off with the high ground. Whether or not it's normalized is important, because children don't generally channel their discomfort with themselves into full on dysmorphia in a vacuum. It's not biological like being gay.

No, because our society isn't at the point where you can casually include transgender characters off the cuff. Most of the developed world has begrdugingly gone "okay, people are allowed to be gay" but transgender protections aren't in such a place. They've actually been sliding backwards recently.

Does anyone have the seventh season where the episodes are not 1GB each ?

>but transgender protections aren't in such a place. They've actually been sliding backwards recently
Good, the general public is finally waking up to this bullshit.
Trans rights are impossible to define anyway, because a transgender person isn’t legally defined. If someone doesn’t need hormones or surgery to be trans, if they don’t need to look or dress a certain way to be trans, then what the fuck does being trans even mean other than “I feel like I’m this gender today”? Can’t give legal status to a feeling.

They just need to pull a Kaine from Nier (videogame)

Mournful tits.
