No, he actually did save the franchise by revitalizing interest in it which is what his intended purpose was.
The hate for Scrappy did not come until much later on when Scooby Doo was getting put back to its original cast of characters.

No, Scrappy wasn't really that annoying and it brought a funny dynamic with him being the opposite of his uncle Scooby. Now Flim Flam, that character was a piece of shit until they brought him back for the 13 ghosts movie

Thats cute, really the premise of something forcing Scooby to reluctantly engage with the monster isn't a bad idea.
Maybe the execution was wrong or maybe the premise got stale fast, either way the hate of Scrappy is way too much compared to what he did.

The franchise really didn’t need to be saved. People were just fatigued from the scooby formula at the time, putting the franchise on a shelf for a few years and bringing it back at a later date would have worked just as well.

ALL of the Scooby-Doo guest characters, additions, crossovers, spin-offs were lame. They used to re-run so much of the 70s-80s HB material on Boomerang and about 95% of it was "so bad it's good" tier. You have to enjoy it in a cheesy/endearing way or with ultra nostalgia goggles.

I do wonder where did the hate originated from, It couldn't the first time viewers since is know for a fact adding him saved the franchise for some years.
So the hate came by people who saw the show after the re-runs or by fans of the original show when it aired and later came to hate the new additions years after the original ended.
Its quite lame isn't it the meme started either by people that get mad at old HB reruns or the Scooby equivalent to the TTG hate fans.
