I agree that he wasn't in the wrong attacking the old man who's benefiting off the fire nations massacre but sacrificing a village to take out a relatively small army was wrong.

It's a personal vendetta sprinkled delusions of grandeur, he wasn't going to make any sort of dent to the fire nation only encourage scorched earth tactics on the surrounding areas to eliminate the terrorist. He might have even inspired some from the earth kingdom to ally with the fire nation against any future terrorists threats, whoever that might be defined as.

The Kuomintang did to the japanese in World War II something very similar to what jet tried to the Fire nation in this episode. Flood a whole village killing hundreds their own citizens to kill the japanese occupiers.
