Has western animation forgotten the teen/YA demographic?

animation is stigmatized as only for children in America unless you dial up the raunchiness.

Teens aren't interested in cartoons anymore.

we have kids (humor) and adult (humor) but where is the teen (humor)?

>South Park
>Rick and Morty
>super adult

cartoons are shit now

Western Animation has BECOME the teen/YA demographic

western animation realized teens are just as likely to watch kids and adults cartoons

What are examples of YA animation? It seems like a hard audience to hit. Teens are at the age where they don't want to associate with children's cartoons but will turn to adult cartoons to make them seem more adult. It's a risky audience for something as expensive as animation.
They're adult in that they're inappropriate for children, which is correct.

In terms of themes, no, but they're TV-MA and have very graphic language, violence, and sexual content

>What are examples of YA animation?
Most anime
S1 of Regular Show
Korra, I guess

You're not getting teens back from Kimetsu no Yaiba, MHA or SAO.

I never really got why everyone collectively dropped the teen demographic for animated series since the early 00s

>Kipo
Fuck off. That's a Millennial cartoon. Nothing more

There's just nowhere to put it on traditional TV. Either you're a kids show, a Fox-type adult-leaning family sitcom, or Adult Swim/Comedy Central raunchfest.
CN tried in the early 2010s to nudge their demographic up with loosened restrictions on early AT/RS, Sym-Bionic Titan, and Robotomy, but within a year or two they backtracked and decided that they didn't actually want to push the envelope as much as they had been doing.
This is why people were excited when [as] trolled everyone with Adult Swim Jr., as a block for TV-PG shows for 12-16 year olds sounds like a great idea but apparently even they didn't see it.
Disney channel is apparently developing shows meant for 11-14 year olds right now though, with Sabrina Cotugno writing a pilot for one

Fuck adults and fuck teens. They have bullshit retarded taste and ruin everything. If you want a look at what young adult animation would look at just go on twitter and see all the poo-poo pee-pee I'm so clever and funny shit that is posted all day every day. I like shows aimed at the family audience because they are beautiful and pure, but even those are frequently ruined as well.

I thought that's what stuff like She-ra, Voltron and Young Justice were suppose to appeal to?

Anime is beloved by adults, the hordes of Comiket goers who love Naruto aren't kids but men and women in their 30s. Just like people in their 30s read Harry Potter.
Imo the problem isn't not catering to the YA demographic, it's considering the target for the adult demographic too narrow and boring. 30, 40, 50 year olds want to read about adventure that's not kiddified but also not dry boring crap.

That's who the writers are actually writing them for and who the implied target market is, but they're still TV-Y7 (and have the according restrictions) and being made under the impression of the corporate higher-ups that they're kids' shows.

What are the YA audience watching, anyway?

YA is a literary genre, and the vast majority of YA readers are adults, so they're watching whatever adults are watching.

If twitter-kun wants the YA market, more cartoons filled with hot guys need to be made.

By some market estimates, nearly 70 percent of all YA titles are purchased by adults between the ages of 18 and 64.

I hate that just because I'm 30 I'm supposed to only read/watch boring crap and not enjoy good stories anymore. I fucking love Death Note. Fuck this twitter cunt.

He's definitely not saying anywhere you're not supposed to enjoy watching YA stuff because you're an adult, I have absolutely no idea where you're getting that from

Making lewds of what I enjoy is a big part of my enjoyment, I'm an adult and I have a sexuality. Americans HATE seeing anything they associate with minors be associated with lewds. By wanting to make something that's intended for legal minors, he's effectively cutting out the vast majority of the audience - adults with a legal sexuality.

>are purchased by
That feels like a misleading statistic. I read shittons of YA as young as elementary school, but I obviously wasn't the one buying any of it.

This.
Anime in Japan also works because nobody bitches at adult fans drawing porn of their favorite characters.

That's never gonna fly in America, America is too backwards for that.

South Park is now the Randy Marsh show, and seems to be focused on the concerns of 30-45 year old millenials. Rick and Morty is all about depression in between the scifi idiocy. I wouldn't say either of these things cater to teenagers.

I just want to have some idea. please, give me some titles about tv shows watched by the YA thing.

Yeah, about 20% are parents buying for their kids. Over 55% are adults buying books for themselves.

>watch well made and thought out animation
>lmao cartoons are for babies

>watch whatever trash HBO and nexflix are putting out today
>so mature, really makes you think...

That market thinks cartoons are lame and would never admit to watching them.

YA thing is a literary genre, and even then the vast majority of Harry Potter readers are legal adults.

CN actually had a YA hour for a short period of time. It aired Robotomy and...I wanna say Regular Show? Anyway, Robotomy was one of the worst animated bombs the network had every seen on account of the whole it being poorly written trash.

Long story short they just fed the hour to Adult Swim, which frankly should be kicked back to 10pm where it god damn belongs.

Death Note is on Adult Swim though, what's this nigger saying? Let us grown ups have anime at least.

Anything CW puts out is going to have the YA demo as one of its main targets, but like other user said there's a lot of overlap with regular adults, particularly since it's where a lot of guilty pleasure stuff is.

That would be total folly. Kids' tastes stay pretty much the same, whereas teenagers are a lot more fickle and their tastes change rapidly. Also, it's in competition with their freedom to do a multitude of other things besides watch TV, no matter how convenient it might be. Meanwhile, the amount of video content kids are watching, especially Youtube, has shot up. Kids are less discriminating, kids aren't gonna complain about the animation. Focus on the kids.

No, they just hate the adult demographic.

I really doubt there isnt market here. Where are all these anime obsessed 20yos coming from of they weren't watching animation in their teens?

you have to understand adult does not mean mature it means crude and over the top

Yes, all the teenagers are watching anime

It also means erotic and explicitly sexual but that's also Japan's domination.

They haven't forgotten, just the people with all the money don't care because they're out of touch boomers still trying to even figure out what streaming is.
