Try to read Dredd as if you were living in Mega City 01 and it's an actual propaganda piece. He's the perfect posterboy for a completely fucked up system. He might be in the right and enforce justice better than anyone, but once you begin to think as "this guy is the ideal representation of the shit we have to deal with on a daily basis" you realize how fucked up Dredd (and the judges) are.

So this made me think about the basic judicial system in the Dredd universe. Are there actual lawsuits and such in the Judge Dredd universe? If there is, are Judges like Dredd actually involved? What happens if you lose your lawsuit? Do you get punished for wasting the courts time?

You're right but being an ideal representation, Dredd sticking to the law to a T depends on an idealized law as well, but jurisprudence is a very subjective and nuanced form of science, which would probably make a Our-Earth Dredd be a bumbling, indecisive judge.

Supreme court justices need to make interpretations of the law which Dredd would never do. They need to be able to say "this law is unjust" when that's the case, which Dredd woild never do.

Reminder Dredd strives for the spirit and word of the law to remain the same.
If he sees a law that is pointless or overly cruel, he'll amend it.
The issue is Megacity 01 is a place full of over the top futurepunk criminals.

To be fair Dredd did lobby for the removal of the Anti-Mutant laws in the Big Meg after traveling the Cursed Earth and seeing that mutants were just regular people too. He did rigorously enforce the anti-mutant laws until their removal, sending mutants to internment camps and citizens to the cubes but he did fight to appeal them
