People think that animation is something more than a babysitting tool now. So they have to have all these deep meanings and boring plots kids don't give a shit about.

You fail to see the real issue here. It's that they routinely make their gay drama romances, which is clearly not for kids nor shouldn't be watched by kids. And at the same time they refuse to make good, consistent animation because "it's just for kids".

So you can TELL it's not for kids, yet they use said kids as their eternal crutch for defending the shitty laziness of their show.
And truth be told, kids don't deserve good animation any less than adults. They might not have the same appreciation and a lower threshold for quality, but that doesn't mean you should shovel your shit down their mouths.

Kids who watch crap become adults who watch crap.

"maturity" doesnt just mean a show like avatar, which is all deep and serious n shit with an overall consistently mature show. take for example older spongebob, which didnt have a serious plot but instead very solid humor that both adults and children can enjoy. id consider both respectable animation in their own way
steven universe isnt either. its not for kids who wants a really mature overarching plot, but its not just funny and silly either. its a load of pointless faff and most of the "mature themes" are characters crying and having sad feelings
