I always liked that they had him grow it out instead of just turning up one day with a fabulous new do. Hair as a literal representation of character growth is usually done in reverse, but he didn't have that option when the ugly topknot was the only hair he had to start with.

his "redemption" arc was obvious from the first episode, it was clear he was never really a villain, and all the good guys held his hand the entire step of the way and made his "arc" extremely easy for him
