it wasnt meant to be a instruction manual
It wasnt meant to be a instruction manual
It was meant to end the age of superhero comics in America. It sadly didn't take.
It deformed Superheroes. It along with Killing Joke and Dark Knight Returna ruined Superheroes all the way into the modern day. That’s it’s legacy.
The HBO series was predictive programming.
>race riots
>cops are the enemy
>billionaire false flag
>Frances Fisher calling for a race war on twitter
how did it ruin superheroes
Everyone tried to imitate Watchmen and in the process made horrible horrible choices in their established comic book canon. To say nothing of the overabundance of grimdark.
>Everyone tried to imitate Watchmen
give 3 semipopular to popular examples
Watchmen wasn't grimdark imo
It created a landscape where people think capeshit needs to be serious, self-aware, edgy and "realistic" to be good.
I honestly don't even have anything to do with the works themselves but fuck man their legacy was one of shock value and edginess.
To be fair this was back when shock value and edginess weren't common practice, the idea of taking a genre and exploring it under a critical and dark lens wasn't a tired trope
I thought the HBO series was insanely bootlicking to cops, except the cops are made up of black people.
Yeah. It sucks the works themselves inspired so much negativity. No wonder Alan Moore hates himself for writing the book.
>No wonder Alan Moore hates himself for writing the book.
source pls, google only turns up with HBO show
reminder that Watchmen was outsold by Man of Steel and the worst part of the 90s can be traced back to Image founders and stuff like Death of Superman
So far this thread has been a complete circlejerk.
As a huge fan of Watchmen, I wasquite curious about the point OP was making, keeping an open mind.
Asked for examples of copying the Watchmen, no response.
Asked for Moore saying he hates his own book, no response
Is this whole board a giant circlejerk? Do you all just accept what everyone says as facts if it is against convention but in line with board's current memery?
I accept that Watchmen changed the whole comic scene, but it changed it for good. It made people realize comics can be for adults too. Which is NOT to say that they have to be grimdark or edgy, plenty of comics came out after Watchmen aimed at adults but still silly and childish at heart, just with larger themes than "beat up the evil guys".
I think Marvel and DC are failing miserably and doing the opposite of this. They are trying to stay grimdark and edgy and political while having zero substance deep down. They are catering to children (which is not a bad thing at all really) while trying to look like they are running with adult themes.
>grimdark
As if it's something bad.
I think it is because that bad writers are using Watchmen as a scapegoat, there's an edit of Infinite Crisis where Johns blames Moore for the grimderp that Johns wrote
user , even Warhammer fans have a limit to grimdarkness
Grimdark is like licorice. If you like it, you'e an asshole.
"Man of Steel" and "Death of Superman" aren't lauded and held up as landmarks in the industry, everyone in comics fellates "Watchmen" and acts like it's the Bible.
>Death of Superman
>not a landmark
user , Watchmen wasn't influential at the time
Watchman is my favorite comic book
It was meant as an inspiration what boundaries you can push!
Not really, it was more a love poem at superheroes!
Because capeshit is run by baby brains who can't understand depth and nuance to save their lives.
They couldn't see the underlying positive message in the work and instead gravitated to surface bullshit like "LOL GLASS SMASHED IN HAND".
the show was about racism in USA
All this
It is just like for Zig Forums,
minecraft - everyone tried a minecraft clone
League of legends - everyne tried a moba
Csgo - everyone tried an arena fps
many jump on the bandwaggon, but rarely they know what they are doing.
>everyone in comics fellates "Watchmen" and acts like it's the Bible.
It is. People just don't understand that it's not because of the story, but the way it's told.
Where was it predictive? When they made it, it was already there since 2016!
It was more a social commentary from a liberal or far left standpoint.
It was more a revenge porn for far left. One step more and it would have been similar to the turner dairies!
>it's not because of the story, but the way it's told
this, watchmen could be a story about funny animals, but if it were told the same way, it would still be a masterpiece
oh wait that's cerebus
I bet it was outsold by some spider-man event, spawn or x-men 1.
But it was acclaimed by everyone and was the best sold graphic novel.
Really makes you think...
>What is civil war
>What is Omac/Brother eye
Someone doesn't actually read comics
have you ever even heard of charlton comics? they were ripping off watchmen for years before DC stopped them
>circlejerk
Yes, sometimes it is. But not everyone is constantly in a thread.
It was good, it spawned good ideas. But like anything good, it can spawn bad things too.
And Mavel and DC have the problem, no vision where headed or good creative teams.
