What are some good sci-fi war comics to check out?
One of King's best works or his best work flat out.
And once you've read it you can stop reading King if you want because everything else he writes is similar enough.
It looks to me like there's not decent collections of DC's war comics aside from some $100+ Sgt. Rock Archives and some black and white Showcases. I'll pick up the Showcases over time, but for now what are some standouts I should look for in floppies?
It's not DC but I just started reading Sgt. Fury and the howling commandos and that's a pretty fun one to read
The Nam is probably one of the best war comics ever written.
Off the top of my head:
- The Forever War
- Rogue Trooper
- Bad Company
obvious one but wathever
I miss Enemy Ace so much bros, do you think he'll ever get another solo series? Or even a one-shot?
Really looking forward to the Stringbags. Ennis' war comics are always my favorites and Holden kicked ass in World of Tanks. Although I did have a chat with some people online about the difference between Ennis' aviation and tank stories, how he usually tends to wax a bit more poetic when there's planes involved. But I think his Enemy Ace hit a very strong, solid sweet spot between air and ground war.
I really appreciate the almost slice-of-life feeling of the first half before Murray leaves.
Looks cool, when is it set to release?
Our Fighting Forces Giant made me want a Priest Black Label Unknown Soldier book.
I wish. I'm currently huntimg down all of his appearances, just a few issues of Star Spangled to go.
It'd be hard to top Ennis's War in Heaven mini. Hopefully if they do do anymote, it'll be back in WWI
Came out a couple of weeks ago but I haven't been able to read it yet.
Fukken nice.
What do the people here think of Weird War Tales? I like how its both a war comic and also a horror comic so fans of stuff like Tales From the crypt or Vault of Horror will get something out of it too.
For me, it's Kirby's run on The Losers. My favourite Kirby. It's just as crazy as OMAC or Kamandi but with better characters. But the EC war books (Frontline Combat and Two-Fisted Tales) are kino too.
I'm reading Sgt. Fury & Howling Commandos as it comes out in Epic Collection, but it's slow af. Can hardly wait for them to get to the Freidrich/Severin era, I've heard it's awesome.
I've been curious about this one for a while. How are you reading it? Online or was it collected?
Far as I know there are two TPBs out there that collect the first dozen or so issues, but for the rest you're gonna have to go digital.
There are three trades from 2009-2011 that collect the first 30 issues, along with The Punisher Invades The 'Nam collecting 52-53 and 67-69. The first volume goes for about three times cover price, but the rest aren't too costly.
Awesome! Thanks for the heads up.
My personal favourites are probably Last Day in Vietnam, The Other Side and Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths.
My favorite DC war comic honestly. I even ran an TRPG game based on a bunch of the stories
>For me, it's Kirby's run on The Losers
That's a rather controversial opinion given the changes Kirby did.
Bump
Dear Billy is my favorite War comic and favorite Ennis comic too.
The Vertigo mini was great, with some big names of the time like Morrison and Quitely, Ennis, Milligan, Azzarello. Tunnel rats was my favorite story from it.
What aspect of Dear Billy makes it so good for you?
Educate me, user. I mean, it's been 40+ years so not sure it's still "controversial" but were people honked off at the time that The King came onto Our Fighting Forces?
Thanks, good user.
No love for Fury: My War Gone By yet in this thread?
It's from the POV of a British nurse who was raped in a Japanese camp and left to die. She gets caught in a loop of vengeance and self pity. I love all of Ennis' war stories desu, especially Boom studios Battlefields.
I like it. It shows off the best of what I like to call the marvel "Ennisverse".
When Kanigher created and initially wrote the comic, it had a very distinct kind of fatalistic and cynical, almost nihilistic tone, emphasizing the horror of war. I mean, it was called the Losers for a reason. When Kirby comes along, it suddenly goes to the opposite direction and turns into a bombastic Kirby war comic that is nothing like what it was before. It’s a total tonal whiplash.
