At this point the word is mostly used to instantly piss off someone or look cool. I can't help but think of a pasty white kid laughing and nodding his head like he just had sex. Any other time it's genuinely used in as racist a tone as possible. That being said, in fiction it should be used for accuracy in depicting a racist character.
