I remember in my middle school we had this but I was never a hall monitor so I have no clue how the process worked.

Middle school however did have these elective "classes" called Aid students/classes where instead of going to a class to learn something you become a teachers/administrators aid which entails thing such as helping the teacher in their class do paperwork or filing or working on the main office. I imagine that's how hall monitors also functioned.

It was basically free child labor.

I was a hall monitor when I was a kid. I let people go about their business, I just used it as an excuse to not go to math.
