How about an occasional monster of the week type deal? The show kinda had episodes like that and would make sense considering it is a world where kids can imagine whatever they want, some likely to have unintended consequences.

we dont need a reboot. a reboot isnt necessary if we dont have a great idea for how the show should go first and foremost. going "i want to reboot this show because it was good. but how?" is the first step to making a shitty reboot

The term 'imaginary friends' isn't PC nowadays. They would need to be called 'headmates' and all of them - but ALL of them - would be Cumberbatch's Holmes, the 12th Doctor Who and a number of Harry Potter characters.
Anything else would invite BLM-style riots but with overweight tumblrites.

Besides a shitty art style, what else could they do?
You get your diversity with Goo, Wilt, and Ed. You get your female character with Frankie and mean spirited humor seems to be a staple of the network's only show. Plus a really simple premise you can spin till the death of the sun, how can you mess it up?
