I think that's also largely thanks to Sonic X's portrayal of Amy. Even in S3 she was pretty capable on her own, but they amped up her obsession in the series to the point where it's the only thing people think about and poke fun of when it comes to Amy's personality.
Also I think you're overreacting there, she's not some genius she's just being a coordinator calm down there. The whole point of IDW Amy and even Tails is to reestablish their characters and show how much they've grown since then (which lets face it, Sega fucked up there).

Sally Acorn has always been really weird to me because she's a Sonic character but she's never once been in any of the games. She only exists in the comics and the cartoons, right? It's always felt really bizarre to me, as somebody who only barely watched the old Sonic cartoon and whose primary exposure to the franchise has been through the games. Sally has always basically been the ultimate example of what a deeply strange property Sonic is, or has become.

Same here, never knew about past properties like SatAM, Underground and AoStH until later. I think that's the majority of fandom though, since this was the early days where Sonic was just slapped onto IPs and how nothing really happened when the comic finally died.

The trouble with the Sonic fandom is the exact same trouble that MLP has: furries. The exact same people that made bronies a blight upon the Earth are the ones responsible for the most awful behaviors of the Sonic fandom, including its deranged headcanons, its harassment of creators and Sega itself, its insistence on really autistic, hairsplitting elements that drive extremely angry and violent reactions (like the whoe Robotnik/Eggman thing), and so on. All typical furry behavior. There is no collection of fans in any fandom that drive things to madness like the furries.
