What was Zig Forums‘s reaction to this?

I binged the show after it aired, but I thought that part was pretty hype.

I wasn't on Zig Forums then but little me thought it was fun as hell.

People went apeshit for a brief period, then quickly lost interest when they realized that nothing for the rest of the series could measure up to that hype. Once the central mystery of the show was revealed, it was basically over.

i never followed GF, the first time i saw Ford i thought it was some stupid OC

I actually think the magnitude of the hype surrounding Not What He Seems is what soured people on the ending. People were kind of expecting the series to get more intense from there and it didn't. People started to cry about how the show had gone to shit when the episodes were merely fine instead of amazing. Tourist Trapped is the only truly BAD episode of that batch. NWHS was so good that other episodes looked lame by comparison.

So, is this another case of a show that went downhill right after an amazing episode?

He reads like a stupid OC, honestly. He's a bit of a Gary Stu. The episodes he was in show only hinted at his main character flaw (that he cares more about knowledge than the wellbeing of people around him) so he mostly came across as this super smart cool guy who Dipper immediately idolizes. Journal 3 gives him more depth, but it was too little too late.

Technically yes, it does go downhill after NWHS. But with the exception of Tourist Trapped, I think the episodes are about the same quality as the monster of the week type episodes from the first season. So not actually bad, just disappointing by comparison.

I thought Stan was far less interesting after this. The whole mystery was that he really knew what was up with everything and then they pull out a knew character who is REALLY the mentor/wise charactet and Stand basically just becamr Mr. Krabs.

The fandom became weirdly divided about whose fault the rift was, even though both of the stan twins clearly fucked up

I was spoiled by a meme on Tumblr that pointed out that both the Garnet fusion theory and Stan brother theory came true in the same week.

He was meant to look good to make Stan jealous, but he was very flawed and you could tell. He was arrogant, self absorbed, and shown by his deal with Bill as very headstrong and gullible. This contrasted to Stan's street smarts. A lot of the fandom actually hated him.

i thought they would do at least one episode with dipper joining ford on a paranormal/multiverse expedition
>it would be really amazing and exciting at first, with hints at a universal truth
>then ford puts dipper in danger to get closer to the ultimate knowledge
>dipper loses trust in ford and chooses to go back to school with mabel like he does in the canon

I noticed that the tumblr fandom became weirdly obsessed with Ford while here there was a decidedly pro-Stan circkejerk.

I think this ending would have sat a lot better with people if Ford's carelessness had been played right. Choosing to stay in Gravity Falls would have resulted in Dipper turning out like Fiddleford.

People didn't like the ending, as I recall, because they'd been given conspiracy tidbits and clues all show and were expecting the ending to tie things together more than it did. Case in point, the wheel of symbols shown in every intro and often referenced by Bill, with several symbols clearly tied to specific characters. When it got used in the ending, it was clear there hadn't actually been any forward planning about it. For a show that leaned so heavily into fan speculation, that was a real blueballing.

the ending did feel anticlimactic to me because dipper wasn't really struggling with his decision to leave. i guess weirdmageddon traumatized him away from the paranormal
>Dipper turning out like Fiddleford
fuck i can even see his character design distorting like that

Counterpoint.

I instantly hated this smug six-fingered bastard. He is my least favorite character.

Was anybody actually duped by this?

So much damage control from anti-twin theory fags, btfo so hard they still seething to this day

Screenshots? I wasn't active in the fandom at the time, but I'd love to see examples of the rage.

Absolutely not true. You know nothing of this board and are just trying to pass off your personal reaction as Zig Forumsā€˜s.

You could actually contribute to the thread by posting a more correct answer, you know. Would you care to enlighten us?
