I’m not sure if this counts as capeshit, but for me it’s Hellboy. The reason for this is because while he’s a deeply flawed and world weary being, he still attempts to defy his fate and keep going foward, despite knowing that he’ll never be normal nor free from his past. He’s the son of the Demon, a World ender, and the descendant of King Arthur, and yet he’s still a wisecracking blue collar worker despite his birthright and years of pain and misery.

On a more debased level: Kat because she's a nerdy girl who fucking loves science and makes lovecraftian beings crap their pants.
On a more "cerebral" level: The scientists in Gunnerkrigg Court because they're at least trying to figure stuff out(not too much unlike early Annie.) Like that one panel where Kat gets sort of irritated at how Alistair saying "Kay" to his parents offer for him to become a bird becomes an apparently binding contract to turn into birds. Even if these characters might themselves make things worse in their effort to make it better, yeah, it does seem unfair that Alistar got into a whole mess of shit without really knowing what he was getting into.
While I ultimately favor Annie because she's a hot mess and therefore incredibly compelling, it is hard not to love Kat. Both of GKC's main protagonists are great characters.
A protagonist so good that if you put him as the main character in any other show, he would improve it by 50%.
