Was this show ever good or did I just grow up?
Was this show ever good or did I just grow up?
I hate you guysssssss
Bump
Yes IMO early seasons were good. Those had creative writing instead of just forced actual pol bullshit. I mean Mr. Hankey, Satan, Aliens.
Like most cartoons they ran out of ideas, but because of the simplistic style and puppetry they can pump out cartoons pretty easily. I'm honestly not surprised they went the way of political satire, seeing as it was satirical to begin with.
It was a great show for its time
>tfw rewatching Attitude Era and seeing South Park signs fucking everywhere
I miss when it was just dumb kid shit mixed with shock humor, it's too political now.
It was ALWAYS political you pissbaby
I miss when most episodes stood on their own. Serialization, while still being funny, ruined the show
While that is true, the politics were used as a jumping off point for comedy and not the other way around.
attitude era actually still holds up
thats why we have AEW
I love watching old episodes whenever I see them, the newer episodes are just genuinely not as funny. It feels like they're phoning it in now, and the comedic timing isn't as good.
It is still funny
The early seasons used to be creative. Nowadays it's just riffing on current events. Everybody knows that when the new season comes out they're going to make an episode about coronavirus and another about #BlackLiveMatter. It's predictable in a way the earlier episodes weren't.
Raw nihilism starts to wear on you after a while. It's still a good show, but I can't do it anymore.
they just reference real shit directly instead of coming up with a creative in-world analogy like the okama gamesphere
The early seasons were written like a good kids cartoon with adult themes, once Cartman starts talking like a spoiled teenager it starts to slowly shift into a bad Fox cartoon
The only "in-world analogy" I can recall from recent times was Mr Garrison as a Trump analogy and that was fucking garbage. Regardless of your politics it's obvious they weren't planning on him winning and fucked themselves over with their hubris.
I have noticed a few people in the thread saying the early seasons were good. What exactly do you mean by the early seasons, the first 3, the first 6, the first 10 seasons?
I personally think seasons 6-10 were the best
Youre kinda right , early cartman voice was really funny
The best episodes had current events as a backdrop/running jokes rather than the main focus of the plot of the episode.
>it's obvious they weren't planning on him winning
'Member "Obama Wins"?
I 'member.
Is it hubris if literally everyone thought he was a joke and wasn't going to win? I mean, he won obviously but most people on either side were betting on it going the other way around.
Compared to the simpsons and family guy south park definetly has a longer shelf life the consensus seems to be that quality dipped harshly with season 20 bit they picked themselves back up again.
I was sure he would win. I just thought how people are retarded on average.
even trump didn't want to win. he was betting on losing so that he could make a right wing media empire out of nitpicking everything hillary did as president
I think is still funny, as long as you realise they still make fun of both sides instead of being propaganda for any then is just comes down to the actual humour.
You cant even call the show pro weed now as they show Randy as the bad guy too often.
Decent back in the late 90's, great in the early/mid 00's. Hit or miss in the late 00's/early 10's, and then felt tired by the mid-late 10's.
It can still make me laugh from time to time, but the 2016 season was an absolute mess, and they haven't been able to fully recover from it since.
>instead of being propaganda
Center right libertarian propaganda is still propaganda
This show needs to focus on its characters more. Instead of being "here's a political take/recent event and here are our characters thrown into it" it should be "here are our characters and the thing that happens to them references a political take/recent event". Some of their best episodes follow the latter formula.
Sometimes I wish we could go deeper into the characters and their relationships with others. I wanna see an episode about Craig and his circle of friends. I want to see a story revolved around the girls, I wanna see a flashback episode featuring some of the adult characters as children.
