The dynamic they played with more recently was "she saw him from afar and was into that, but she's having trouble with that onnnnne liiiiittle thiiiiing." Cue attempts to let him know he stinks, or remove the smell, all failing or backfiring.

Pepe still gets played around with from time to time. I think a lot of Looney Tunes stuff uses the idea that Pepe's ONLY negative traits are being pushy and smelly. A lot of shows show he's actually pretty alluring to the lady folk until they catch a wiff. And if he's not smelly at all he's just a lady's man.

Pepe as a character could last, but his schtick of being a pushy romantic is either going to be a source of slapstick or downplayed heavily

Pepe has kept appearing here and there. I mean he's iconic, so even if they put him in some really banal role, he'd be marketable by recognition alone.
Plus he's pretty flexible, since he has a well-defined personality. You can put him in a totally new situation and plot, and he'll still be debonair Pepe.
And even within his lecherous schtick, there's a lot you can do to make it more innocent. Like have him talk a big game but actually be clueless what to do when a woman actually returns his affections.
Honestly I'd enjoy watching the character dynamics switch up some more. Pepe is a classy guy, he'd make a very easy foil or adversary for Bugs or Daffy.
