It just diminished over time. I think once the treehouse was destroyed, that's when it started to decline and a lot of fans (including bandwagoners at the time) left.

Precisely. It allows them to move past their autistic mental lock that women can't compete with ponies, and showcases all the same strengths and moe-elements present in their precious show whilst simultaneously not adhering to the familiarity of Equestria Girls. EQG was a step in the right direction to help them get over that psychological hangup, but, ultimately it was still technically the exact same characters, just in human form. DC Super Hero Girls on the other hand, utilizes all the same character archetypes as the Mane 6 in FiM but they are still different enough to get bronies to break free of their comfort zone.
There's alot of bronies who were simply unable to fap to women anymore out of intimidation. DCSHG was the perfect way to ease them out of that funk. Unfortunately, many bronies were scared off by the overt Feminist-pandering in the show. Kinda wish Faust toned it down a bit, to be honest.
