One simple fact that cartoons will always be behind anime: because the west views cartoons as being for only children. As such, cartoon creators never have the incentive to put any effort into their series, because why should they? Their target audience is literally 7 years olds who could care less about a "deep" and "thought provoking" plot. Same with animation. Kids only care about bright colors. Plus, how is an animator going to explain to a 65+ year old producer why it's "totally necessary to increase the budget 175% in order to animate badass fighting scenes"?

I've never seen anything in the american animation industry that's even remotely as beautiful as Escaflowne. American character designs are always either vapid or ugly or both, the visuals lack that cinematic vision like a movie or a painting that anime has. 30 years ago, way before American animation, a lot of "big" anime (Sailor Moon, NGE, to an extent Takahashi) had LGBT themes and characters.
It also often talked about gender rights shit before Western cartoons. West cartoons had 1 female character to 20 male characters, anime could be 50/50 gender balance and no one blinked an eye. West cartoons never dealt with sexual assault and its fallout, anime sometimes does.
Why: Western cartoons were for 2-5 years olds, anime could be for preteens or even teens. Manga way more popular with the public than comics in the U.S. Way better Arts Education.

The main thing is that it addressed them in a way that was more thought provoking and competent, rather than bending over and taking it from whiners on social media. When people talk about sjw stuff in western shows you can’t take it as a 1 to 1 comparison when there’s such a stark difference.
