This is me just bullshitting but my guess is that the rest of the world follows American cultural trends and each region trails a little behind. It's probably similar to how the Simpsons is popular in Latin America. The trend of being goth or how girls in America acted a few years ago might still be popular there.

seems like that wiki entry is misterpreting something he said about johnny. they're paraphrasing him heavily there. check your shit. if they're of mexican descent they have so little traces of it they're completely americanized. mexican is a nationality not a race.

yeah and a bunch of mexican creators working on cartoons were part of those scenes too. specifically I can recall Jorge Gutierrez and Sandra Equihua.

also those scenes were mixed with all different kinds of scenes too? so even teens who weren't exactly punk would be exposed to the style since it was so prevalent and it even even seeped into scenes that are completely removed from rock. it's great!
