I think we're supposed to understand the message that love hurts if you aren't able to accept the totality of a person's nature, but it means fuck all as his sacrifices amount to shit since she's happy and he's not because she doesn't have to sacrifice anything due to her character. The one-sidedness ruins any point of her character beyond being a hate sink.
