We didn't see them during a time when it could have worked out. The difference in their physical age isn't HUGE, but it's enough to raise some flags with S&P at their current age. Without a time skip, confessing to Sokka would just lead to a definite rejection. It's best to leave things the way they are, where we can pretend they got together at some point because nothing directly contradicts it.

But I think they'd be pretty happy together. Lin would have father that would be incredibly proud of her and Katara would be there as great aunt for rule strict Lin. Most likely second daughter would be spoiled a lot but wouldn't feel need to rebel as much with dad like Sokka. Sokka might be just out of range, for their age at least. I think after a year or two it wouldn't matter, but Toph still seems very much like a little girl and Sokka is already fuckin. Aang and Katara seem closer to each other in terms of their stages in development, although she's kind of robbing the cradle too. Probably a double standard, and maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Tokka could have happened with no outcry and everyone would be cool. We can only dream.
