Everyone has a bit of The Rot in them. A tooth cavity, dead cells, dead skin, etc. You could argue that the Rot Fly was merely a way of getting close enough to connect to the rot in a victim, to make it spread. So by that logic whatever dead cells inside the person spreads, and the neck snap is just the quickest way to make an instant corpse. Pretty humane compared to the alternative

This part of Sandman went from disturbing to funny and back again.

I can't recall the name, but there was a sci-fi comic where a planet of tiny people had taken over and were using normal humans as vehicles. They captured a "fresh" one and basically lobotomized her, so they could use her as a crane or transport or whatever.
I haven't read it since I was a kid, but I remember it freaking me out a bit.
