Imagine it turning into a rape gag fest within a few years because you wanted to expand your pallet with another sitcom. The Critic was good but the crossover was still pretty lame. Being tongue-in-cheek about the inherent foibles of crossover episodes doesn't excuse the parts that still played them unironically, and the conflict was a bit phoned in. Like you'd think with how they joked with everything else, they would play around with the fact that Marge and Jay are pushing a stereotypical melodramatic film festival movie, whereas Homer wants one he genuinely enjoys, but instead it's play 100% straight and one-dimensional as another "dumbass Homer just needs to not be a dumbass" plot.
